Review Criteria

What students rate when they review a class.

Oasis uses 13 structured criteria so student feedback becomes specific, comparable, and useful for teachers, HoDs, and school leadership.

Research And Experience

Why these criteria are a serious starting point.

The criteria are not random. They are grouped around classroom climate, clarity, challenge, interaction, agency, real-world connection, teacher preparedness, feedback quality, subject knowledge, approachability, and variety of instruction because those areas repeatedly appear in teaching-quality and feedback research.

MET Project: student surveys predict learning

The Gates Foundation's Measures of Effective Teaching project ran for three years with nearly 3,000 teachers across seven districts. It found that student surveys, observations, and achievement gains together identify teaching more reliably than one measure alone.

Asking Students About Teaching: specific classrooms

The MET policy brief argues that student perception surveys should ask about specific teachers and classrooms, not general school satisfaction. This is why Oasis links reviews to a student's actual classroom and teacher.

Ferguson: Tripod survey results and achievement

Ronald Ferguson reported that students of teachers in the top quartile of Tripod survey rankings learned the equivalent of about 4 to 5 months more in math per year than students of bottom-quartile teachers, with ELA gains also significant.

Can Student Surveys Measure Teaching Quality?
3,000 teacher volunteers were included in the MET project, one of the largest studies of teaching measures.
4-5 additional months of math learning were linked to teachers in the top quartile of Tripod student survey results versus the bottom quartile.

+2 months of additional GCSE progress in EEF's Embedding Formative Assessment trial across 140 secondary schools.

Rowley, Phillips & Ferguson: stable over time

A 2019 study of 12,707 teachers across 874 schools found year-to-year stability coefficients of .46, .48, and .56 for Tripod's 7Cs composite, supporting repeated use for tracking teaching quality over time.

2024 meta-analysis: student feedback improves teaching

A meta-analysis of 23 studies and 314 effect sizes found a significant overall effect of student feedback interventions on teaching quality, with stronger effects when teachers were supported to interpret and discuss feedback.

EEF: feedback and formative cycles matter

EEF's Teaching and Learning Toolkit reports feedback as a high-impact approach based on 155 studies, with an average impact of +6 months. Its Embedding Formative Assessment trial found +2 months of progress across 25,000 pupils in 140 schools.

You can still request your own criteria.

Oasis can start with these defaults, reduce the number of criteria, rename them in your school's language, or replace them with your own teaching and learning framework.
